Our son Josh created an account that is similar to today's Caringbridge. It was called CarePages and sponsored through the hospital. It is a blog and allowed me to connect with all the people...our church ....back home. We had never gone through anything this serious away from home and they became the Body of Christ for us.... Below are the posts as they transpired... just as I wrote them. At some point...out of them I will write a book...about our experience. There were some pretty cool....and funny experiences that I wrote about....
Larry went through this tunnel of love and prayers on his way to surgery...
He is on his way
I will be right here waiting and praying....

Latest update: they called at 5 pm from surgery and they had closed the abdomen and chest cavity for the first part of the surgery. I am not sure but my guess is that was the removal of the upper portion of his stomach. That had gone exactly as they expected which is good. They have now started the 2nd part of his surgery...which is between the right ribs and into the lung area. They will deflate that lung and he is on a respirator. Maybe this is the esophagus part... removing 4 inches of his esophagus and surrounding lymph nodes. The Dr expects another two hours which should be around 7 pm. I will update or josh when possible. thanks for your prayers... Elaine

Still no word.... the desk folks went home so we are now relying on the folks in surgery to call or come out....so that may not be as often.... I expect at least another 30 minutes... or so...depending. The messages are great...thanks so much for the updates. I am reading them to the kids.... Psalms 91 is the scripture we have been claiming....and reading....and that gives us comfort... Everyone here is in good spirits and experiencing God's peace.

Larry is out of surgery in recovery...I cannot see him until he is in ICU...and briefly. Everything was as the surgeon hoped. He went thru surgery wonderfully...no complications.... It appears that it was confined to his esophagus... They felt like it has not invaded any area past the margins or lymph nodes. The in depth pathology will give us a better picture but the initial report....and the doctor was very thorough is that the results were as we hoped. He will be in ICU for several days and cannot eat for about 5 days to be sure there is no leakage of the resection. Pneumonia at this point is a serious issue as well.... so please pray about those..... as well as a quick recovery and about the pain. I will update as I can.... Elaine

Larry is still in recovery. He was not released to ICU because they had to keep him on the breathing tube. Since they collapsed one of the lungs he is still having a little trouble breathing on his own... They expect to take it out in the morning. Both times I went in he seemed aware I was there. He cannot talk because of the tube down his throat and nose. So he has taken to writing. When I told him I could not stay and had to come back ...he wrote he was the Birthday Boy. :-) When they commented that they could not keep him sedated he wrote he was a control freak...and occasionally wants his nose scratched. He wrote and asked the nurses name ( a man )...in Spanish....go figure... ;-) He knows he is doing well...and anxious to be free of all the contraptions so you might pray he is able to do that. His stats otherwise look pretty good. His color is much better and he is in and out of sleep. Initially he was pretty uncomfortable but seems much more calm and working with it. They have been pretty good about letting me see him. I have come back to the hotel for a few hours break and will return about 5 am when I anticipate they will begin to bring him around to prepare him for the dr. to remove the tube. He needs to be awake for that. I will update tomorrow as I can. E.

Larry still in ICU We need prayer regarding several things but most important is the condition of his lungs. They are not responding as they should and his levels are red flagged.... They will try reducing meds and doing some breathing treatments and if that does not work they will put back in the breathing tube. This is a very important prayer concern. Not sure what the prob. is....the x ray def shows prob in both lobes....and may have to do a bronchial scope... scope thru the bronchial tube I guess. Also kidney under functioning.... creatinin levels more elevated.... Blood pressure is elevated due to no BP meds.... and pain...will be an issue again.... Otherwise... :-) he is doing good...He looks good...and is responsive.... joking when he can. I will post as I know more.. E.

at bedtime Larry had improved just a dot. The numbers on his blood gases?? are better. don't ask...all i know is it is important. The numbers are still a bit wacky but at least they have made some move toward better. The kidney creatinin has also improved. Tomorrow will be a busy day for him. They plan to work him hard to get more improvement. He has a fantastic team of doctors who are there who are doing such a great job. He is not resting too easy as they had to cut back on pain meds in order for him to breathe deeply and cough.... thanks for all the wonderful messages, email and prayer support. I will try to answer as I can....but not allowed much in ICU. Elaine

Good Morning! It is a good morning because Larry has improved a dot more! Praise the Lord! His numbers and the machines and stats that rule under the Lordship of Christ Jesus are a bit more in the right direction. His skin color, eyes and communication are improved and he even gave a little smile along with those attempts to joke. His fantastic nurse Jennifer...who is tough ..yet nurturing....won't take anything off of him and a good match for Larry. He loves that of course. She intends to have him stand by the bed today..if he is off the epidural. According to one of the doctors this morn..they intend to more reduce his pain med in order for him to be able to work harder. The entire staff and team of doctors are amazing....and continue to remind us of God's favor and mercy.
We are receiving all your wonderful emails and messages. I cannot begin to tell you how encouraging they are..and we give thanks for each one. Yesterday....we had some really bad moments.... and felt so helpless but I was energized when I knew I could contact a few of you who would get the fire of the Holy Spirit going....and posted our prayer needs to this board.. That wonderful prayer coverage was like an amazing safety net. It washes over me even now to think of it.
This still remains the easiest way for me to keep everyone updated. We are not allowed to have cell phones in ICU but my laptop is OK.. High Speed internet is available...so I feel connected. :-) We send our thanks and love for your continued love and prayers. I will update as I can. If you post to the message board and leave an email I think it automatically contacts you with each new update I put on the board.
God's Blessings to you!

Larry seems to be improved tonight after his scare today with the cardiac event. The cardiologist ordered some meds to slow the heart rate and after a few adjustments it seems to be responding to it. The heart beat stayed irregular most of the day but this evening it seems to be responding as well and the rhythm looks good. We have had doctors in all day.... The normal concerns over the healing of the incisions and the esophagus/stomach seem to have taken a back seat to these more serious issues. His lungs continue to be a concern but Larry worked hard today with therapists and treatments. That along with the cardiac event has left him exhausted tonight. One good piece of news is that the kidneys are functioning at the level they were before surgery. That was low but we are certainly not complaining. The pulmonary doctor will likely do the bronchial scope on Friday if not a marked improvement... He is monitoring those stats diligently. All in all a very tiring day...but we are Praising the Lord that once again things have turned around and we are working toward recovery. He remains in ICU and we continue to be amazed at the medical community there. The highlight of our day was after Dr. Khalil had rushed over in his surgery scrubs and worked with Larry a bit and we had a little improvement. He exclaimed loudly.... " Praise the Lord!" We both loved that....because it certainly echoed our feelings.
We appreciate your continued prayers..and words of encouragement. I read them to Larry....and they seem to feed his spirit. He was not as perky tonight as he was this morning....so my big prayer concern tonight is that his spirit be energized....by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is so battle weary. I will try to update in the morn after I talk to the doctors... God Bless,Elaine

I talked to the doctor this morning and they are pleased with the progress Larry made yesterday evening and this morning. He is not where they would like him to be but they are encouraged by his efforts. Your prayers are very much a part of that progress report.
The x ray was a dot better this morning as well as all other stats.... heart....kidney...and those other breathing numbers that tell the oxygen/ carbon dioxide levels in his blood. Sometimes it is hard to understand all the important details in order to explain to you all. I do know information is so helpful in order to know how to pray. So for all you medical folk out there.... if it comes thru as an Elaine Paraphrase....you know I am at least somewhat close... and is getting us in the general vicinity. :-) The important thing is the vital signs for heart, lungs and kidney are a dot improved...and heading more in the right direction. He has been resting this morning because he had and exhausting day yesterday and did not sleep well last nite. The good news is that the tubes from his chest are out...and the big tube from his nose. yea! That has given him so much more comfort! He still has a variety of things going every which way....but I think it encouraged him to know he was able to get those removed. The dr. thought if he continued to work hard ( coughing and doing all those breathing exercises).. that he might even be able to get out of ICU in a few days...no promises though. fyi: the hard work consists of...coughing, moving or turning, blowing in this tube that pushes a tiny little ball up to a certain level and these short bursts of air forced thru a breathing tube with albuterol in it. He also does these measured deep breathing....exhaling and so forth.. Things we take for granted every day. Those are typical for this type of surgery but he has had a hard time doing them with some of his setbacks. They are basically trying to find a balance between the pain...which is severe....and keeping him alert enough to do the work that is so necessary to speed up the healing process. That is complicated by the heart, lung and kidney issues. The meds for pain and lung complicate heart and kidneys. It sure makes you appreciate the delicate balance that God created in each of us. You cannot help but feel amazed at how it all works together.
Yesterday he hit a low and felt defeated. It seemed like every time he would take a teeny movement forward in progress....a new issue would come along and knock him back down... The tough approach of the nurses and doctors yesterday afternoon was a bit overwhelming too..but it seems to have worked. PTL! What a challenge they have to provide all that positive encouragement that is so necessary and tough love. I have such a respect for all they do.
There were a few questions about the hospital. Here in Houston...there is this medical area..that is like a Star Wars looking city of hospitals. We have never experienced anything like it. MD Anderson, and other hospitals..including St Luke's ...are all in a large area clumped together. Larry is at St. Luke's. It is an Episcopal Hospital formed by the Episcopal diocese. It is internationally famous as a heart institute. It is the world leader in cardio surgeries and the cardiac catheter lab is the busiest, largest & best equipped in the world. The first heart transplant was here and 1st artificial heart and it is a cancer care teaching hosp. So when you wonder why Houston.....it all begins to make sense...post surgery. Imagine that! :-)
Your wonderful messages are something we look forward to everyday. With all our trials we continue to trust and rejoice in the great healing work the Lord is doing....body, mind & spirit. Thank you for being such an important part of that. I will update again when I can. :-) May the Lord Bless you today! Elaine and Larry

a bit of good news...we can all use some. :-) Things are definitely improving here. He seems to be in a much better frame of mind as the day goes on. The reports are improving and he actually sat in a chair and joked with the nurses...and laughed! He got to brush his teeth... which felt like a million dollars. He is only allowed a few ice chips...now and then. No food or liquid for some days yet. He lasted over an hour! After he got back in bed he fell into a deep sleep...which is good too... He needs some rest. He hasn't slept well...and he can't take anything that would help with that just yet. So Praise God for little mercies. :-) While he sat that hour I caught him up on all the messages sent... He loved them all...and made comments about each one. He sends his love and thanks to each of you. Blessings, Elaine

All is good...temp at 100.6. He has gotten up again and been working on clearing up those lungs. Hoping for a good report. He teased the kids that the doctors would take the portion of esophagus they removed and turn it into an esopholaphagus....( name is similar to the character on Sesame Street) so they bought an autograph dinosaur and named it ....Esopholaphagus.... It is now monitoring his progress. :-)

Wow....How wonderful to end my day reading all these wonderful posts! I cannot wait to share them with Larry tomorrow morning. It is exactly what I need to charge me up for another day. :-)
We had a good day today. We had all forward moving progress...and Larry is encouraged by the results of his hard work. We anticipate tomorrow morning's x ray and update from his doctors...hoping they will be pleased. I would imagine if there is no significant improvement they will run that scope to take a better look. His color was very good at bedtime and he actually channel surfed and was able to chit chat a little. I was thrilled and happy to see him doing ordinary things. He still has that 100.4 fever but so far they aren't too worried...as long as it doesn't climb any.
If all is well they will probably do some significant things with his pain meds tomorrow.. it will move him farther along. I do know he is at the end of his epidural. They explained that there is a cap for using that safely. Pain can sure set you back so please pray there is a reasonable solution for how to continue to manage the pain...yet not hamper the good that has been done with his other issues. We would sure love to get him out of ICU and into a regular room.... It is hard to hang out there...and mostly because it is for the critically ill folks.
I ask your continued prayers for a full recovery....the transition he will have to make at some point to his new esophagus and stomach....and that all his important organs and functions...continue to peacefully allow his body to heal.
Signing off for yet another day of experiencing God's amazing mercy and healing.
Blessings,
Elaine

Good Morning... We seem to be still making progress today. PTL! His surgeon is very pleased with how he is doing and much encouraged by how he looks...which is vastly different than just a few days ago. He continues to be cautious and will likely keep him in ICU for the time being. The pulmonary doctor has ordered a sonogram. His fever is up to 101 again. He sees a little build up of fluid on the outside of the right lung. This is pretty predictable it seems but they want to watch it. He says they will aspirate it and that along with antibiotics will hopefully take care of it. He continues the breathing exercises, treatments and getting up to sit in the chair. He has only taken a few steps and not sure when they will begin to have him walk. The cardiologist is here....and he also seems encouraged by his progress. I could not tell you what all he is giving him to manage all the heart issues...but it sure seems to be working... PTL! Nephrologist doctor just came in and he is also pleased with his progress. Larry is beginning to think about food and drink. It is funny though...I thought he would be crazy for coffee...and he doesn't even miss it... He wants a coke ( which he never wants or drinks) and cheesecake. He hasn't ever been overly fond of sweets...so it is really interesting. :-) He is still only allowed a little bit of ice chips...and he is beginning to look forward to some sort of liquid he can swallow. Not sure when that is but in a few days perhaps.
Our prayer requests this morning are: :-)
* the fluid build up around the lung. Mainly the right but they both have " stuff and junk " still there to be dealt with. Today's x ray sure looks a lot better tho...so the prayers are working!
* fever....I know fever isn't all bad...and a good indicator...but if you would lift all that up to the Lord...He knows what this is all about...inflammation / infection or whatever...
* pain....today they removed the epidural..and he will begin different pain management. Managing that pain is key to his well being.
* Balance...that everything work together toward healing
Blessings to all.... We will read through the posts and enjoy them.
Elaine and Larry

A little Doctor Trivia... :-) I have had a few days to get to know these doctors....and I think I have come up with descriptions of each. Larry agrees with my assessment. :-)
Dr. Khalil.... I have decided the best person I can use to describe him is Gene Wilder...especially in the movie the Frisco Kid. He has an accent very similar.... and seems a bit animated like him. He is awesome... the surgeon whose specialty is thoracic oncology. He comes and personally coaches his breathing and coughing...which is respected by the nursing staff here. They usually do that and they said most don't even bother. He is so funny the way...he does it.... He cheers loudly when Larry does it right by saying... Yeaaaaa! Thank you Jesus! & Praise the Lord! ( in the Frisco kid accent tho ) Larry and I just love that! Go rent the Frisco Kid...gene wilder and Harrison ford... :-)
Dr. Salem of course reminds me of Henry Kissinger...with about the same persona...except he is very affectionate and positive to everyone... esp his patients. He believes that is key to healing. He is deeply respected. He has that somewhat solemn authority about him. He is the oncologist who coordinated everything. We can tell! We have the best of everything! That is God's favor of course. :-)
Dr. Nassar... the cardiologist... reminds me a bit of Onassis...the Greek shipping zillionare... He is very good and sort of quiet. Don't let that throw you off though... He exudes importance.
Dr.Stadnyk ...the pulmonologist. I haven't figured him out yet. He sort of has this piercing quality to his communication.... very direct....measured and to the point. I like him though....he is good at what he does. I will keep thinking and see if I can figure out someone he reminds me of....
Dr. Rubin.... ...awesome. He is the nephrologist... one of the most in charge individuals I have ever met...very knowledgeable in his field...very precise...commanding.... gotta think on him too...he may be a one of a kind... :-)
Please pray for these good men... They are healers...and we are so grateful for them. :-)
Larry resting... His fever has him a bit uncomfortable and the change in meds.. We are using ice packs to help cool him...Dr. Nassar gave him lasix to help with the fluid also. I will let you know later how he is doing. :-)
Blessings, Elaine

The radiologist was not able to aspirate the fluid over the lung using the sonogram. She wanted a better look with a CT Scan. They will likely do that in the morning now. His fever is a bit better at 100 and he is much more alert. The pulmonologist will be in first thing in the morning. Please pray for guidance and clear direction. E.

We have seen all the doctors today and it looks like they will let Larry get out of ICU in a bit. PTL! We are waiting on the ct scan to determine about the fluid build up on the outside of the right lung. Other than that everything else looks good. He may even start navigating some steps around the bed. He is beginning to think a bit more about food....today it is hot buttered toast. :-)
Our prayer needs are....
* that lung....pray for clear answers for how to deal with it.
*his bronchial tubes....the breathing tube irritated it and he is wheezing some.
* continued improvement and balance in the healing process
(kidney, heart, lungs, the incisions...and the surgical resection)
* blood pressure.. It shot up today... back to normal now...but keep that in your prayers..
*sleep... hospitals are busy...esp. ICU and he needs rest
*discouragement...obviously getting to move out of ICU will do much in this dept...but please do keep this in your prayers... there are lots of things to discourage... :-)
We are loving your messages you are posting... Our love and thanks to each one of you!!! It is a happy time each day to hear from you.

Had a good day...made lots of progress. Walked to the window in his room....and of course that exhausted him...and he was ready for a nap. :-) Keep praying about the lungs... it continues to be something to be watched...but so far he is progressing forward. They did not have a room for him to go into so he is still in ICU but hopefully will be moving in the morning. Thanks for your continued prayers and love.

OK...this is what is happening today. It may be a dot long since I have had no time to do this. It has been kind of busy and I have not had a chance to update. Lots of doctors to talk to today...and watching how things develop.
Larry is still in ICU. No room available because they need one with a heart monitor. The doctors decided with all that is going on that it is best he stay here anyway because he is monitored more closely. We have all decided God had a hand in the unavailability... :-)
He continues to have the lung/breathing/oxygen saturation issues. I talked to the surgeon and pulmonologist. The x ray still shows an area on the right lung they are watching. It is probably a combination of a bit of injury during the surgery and some fluid build up on the outside of the lung. ( an Elaine paraphrase)
Basically they are watching for a pulmonary emboli...( sp?) which means a clot that could go to the lung. They already have him on meds that help to prevent it. He is still wheezing but they are giving him something for that too. Everything of course has to be balanced so he doesn't have tachycardia and atrial fibrillation ( fast heart rate and irregular heartbeat or affect the kidneys...that continue to function at pre-surgery level. ( the kidney function continues to be good news ) It is hard for him to get a good deep breath...and that tires him. All this has a way of discouraging him.
The good news is:
Over all...considering the magnitude of this type surgery....he is still progressing. The surgeon told me today that it was not uncommon for one day to be good and the next day to be not as good.. but the overall picture is still progressing.
They have partial results from the pathology and so far no cancer has been found in any of the margin areas. They are now working on the affected areas to get a more clear picture. He was still cautious..they are very serious here about accurate results...which is why we are here....but he is very pleased so far. If the final results are good...he may not have to have follow up radiation or chemo... and that would be such wonderful news! :-)
Larry has a few things he looks forward to each day.. They are:
Messages from his fan club.. :-)
A cold room... at least 68 degrees. We all refer to it as entering the artic area... coats are good. :-)
He looks forward to a good head scratch. :-) He says with wonder and awe that the human touch is amazing. :-)
He talks about that coca cola every day. Those of us who know him are so amazed at that...since he may have had 10 cokes his whole life. :-) This is a coffee man....and he hasn't even mentioned it.
Prayer Needs:
Obviously the lung. The nurse helped me with the prayer request.:-) The right lung needs to clear up and the fluid re absorb and lung re inflate and quickly heal. We esp. want it not to move into pulmonary emboli. His breathing is shallow. The levels are monitored and he has the little nose oxygen thingy but def need an improvement.
Blood pressure is still not stable. They have ordered a patch. The key is not to interfere with the good work the kidney is doing...so please pray about that...the Lord knows the balance needed.
For encouragement... he needs to have a big dose of this... he frets some and asks if he is going to be OK. Larry is one of the most optimistic men I know....and that speaks volumes if he is not in touch with his optimism.
He says to tell everyone hello and thank you for sending all your love & prayers each day.
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry

This is the day...this is the day...that the Lord has made...that the Lord has made. I will be glad....I will be glad and rejoice in it....and rejoice in it!! :-)
Have you ever said a song? I am a tad too tired this morning to rally a tune...but in my heart I am saying this song. Isn't it awesome to know that the Lord made each day! Larry and I have sang this song so many times together... and we are saying it now. We rejoice in the good work the Lord is doing today. :-)
I am waiting until I am allowed to go in and be with Larry and see what this day holds for us. Many of the doctors are already making their rounds and I will let you know what news they give us today.
May your day be blessed...and may the Lord especially bless each one of you for your faithfulness in love and prayer.
Be back in a bit... I see more of his doctors showing up....Lord guide and direct and bless these good men of healing.

A quick afternoon note. We are still waiting to hear the outcome of all those scans and xrays. They did a bunch. Some to check the healing progress of the re section...to make sure nothing is leaking...and also to take a more defined look at that lung. This morning however when the surgeon was here.... he decided to suction it out...or he suctioned something down there.....You do it thru the nose.. yikes! All I can say is...ummmm... there was some junk and crud...about the size of a fist...and there was an immediate dramatic difference! Took him a few minutes to get over the episode but he could breathe and talk with out gasping, panting and playing a harmonica tune with his breathing. After he finished all those lovely tests ....he even walked a lap around this ICU ward!!! He could hardly walk to the window this morning! You should have seen all the smiles and hellos from the nurses...calling him gorgeous. :-) He was feeling his Oates too.... way more like Larry. :-) He even made a few attempts at being a rascal. So....not sure what the tests will reveal...but all I know is some dramatic changes have taken place. PTL!! I will update when I get results...and that may even be in the morning on those.
Blessings! :-)

Larry had a good night....a slight wheeze and whistle but nothing like before. He continues to look better and progress. One of the scans or xrays showed that the re section of the esophagus and stomach as successful..no leakage. PTL! He had apple juice last night....the first liquid he has swallowed since midnight Sunday a week ago! He loved it! He was taken off of his feeding tube and today he will begin moving toward a soft diet. It is possible,if there is a room available, that he will try again to move out of ICU. We are very fond of them...but ready to move on. :-)
I have only seen one doctor so far..a resident...and waiting on the parade of the big docs....to discuss...the results of those x rays...his lungs...breathing....kidneys and heart etc. I do know if we can move it will be on a floor that specializes in heart procedures. Again...God sure knew what he was doing when He brought us here...can you imagine that! :-)
I will update you later....when I have more info to share. As soon as we finish with doctors I will read all the new posts to Larry. We look forward to them everyday.
fyi: To address the internet gossip about the pink girly robe... now you know you are all wondering about it... :-).... it is a "light" red and white pinstripe robe that is a light weight cotton. Larry, being the hot natured guy that he is, does not feel shy about wearing it. :-) He will however enjoy his new manly robe and slippers and hopefully he can do that today and get out of his not so stylish hospital wardrobe. :-)
Off to doctors, hearing from you all...more walking adventures...FOOD...and periodic head scratches. :-)
Blessings and Love

Today was another good day. Larry is finally able to have food! He started out on a liquid diet and has progressed to some other level of a liquid diet... :-) He is happy about it although he said he misses his ice chips. He did several good walking laps around the ICU ward and sat in the chair most of the day. I am still amazed at the dramatic difference from just the other day. He is still weak and tired...and has to work on re inflating that lung but otherwise most of his issues are being managed well.
The xrays showed that the right lung is kind of smushed down a bit....and fluid on the top and the bottom of it. The stomach has been re arranged in a higher location in order to be rejoined with his shortened esophagus...and that takes up some space there too or there abouts. ..I have no clue about the utilities in there :-) All that spells short of breath and wheezy whistle. :-)
Everything else looks great. The re section of stomach and esophagus are healed nicely... and the doctor expects him to be eating solids again soon. He is going to have to learn how to manage his diet since the surgery changed up the way it all works. His meals will be planned, smaller and more of them( six meals tomorrow!)
He is still in ICU. He has to have a bed in a cardiac unit and they have been full so we will see how all that turns out. We are not pushing it...because we have felt like the Lord has him where He wants him.
We aren't sure when Larry will go home. They are being very cautious and careful. He still has restricted visitation and they watch him carefully for infection.
Again...thank you for all the wonderful messages ... We read and treasure each one. Please know your prayers are really making a difference!
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry

Good Morning! A few updates and prayer requests are in order this morning.
* Bronchial Scope ( not sure of proper name??) is ordered for 11 am this morn. We would appreciate your prayers for this. They are still trying to get a better look at things in there. We need a very clear picture....and clear unified decisions for the pulmonary doctor and surgeon on the best way to deal with the right lung if there are still issues. His breathing seems to indicate the lung is still a bit smushed.
* Pain Management... They have moved him to pain pills now that he can swallow. There is a transition to that..... and he is having more pain. There is a balance to be achieved. Please pray for that balance between what he can tolerate...and he has a very high pain threshold....and what is covered with pain meds. Larry is a very good patient...and tough as old cowhide... :-) but this sort of pain is pretty severe. He wants to work with rather than against the healing process going on in his body. Severe pain..that can leave you white faced and sweating bullets can be very counter productive to the healing process. It is also important that it not get out of control. He is doing all the right things...and working hard to move away from any of it. We know the Lord will provide that balance. :-)
* Sleep in a hospital is always an issue... They are very attentive... :-) Can cause some sleep deprivation. Sleeping pills usually are in order....however... he still cannot take them... It seems to cause other issues.. We don't need any other issues. :-) I figure we can just handle this with prayer... So...pray he can sleep...restfully...and deeply... Sleep heals. :-)
* Infection... continued prayers regarding this.
I will update when we know the results of the latest look into "the region" :-) Cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to know I can post our requests and know that Larry's huge prayer network and fan club is hard at work on his behalf. THAT gives us the Peace that Passes all understanding... :-)

11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
Psalm 91: 11-13 NLV
In about 1969 Larry's Nanny Dumas gave him Psalm 91 as his scripture to take with him to Vietnam. She told him he would make it home from the war...and this Psalm explained why. When Nanny Dumas said it...you could bank money on it. :-) Larry believed and had faith...based on the strong faith of his Nanny. We knew early on...that Larry would be facing fierce lions and serpents as he went forward in faith to receive his healing. Once again...Nanny's words stood as strong as her faith and we claimed the promises of God in Psalm 91. The Psalmist goes on to say God will rescue and honor him..and give him long life. We thank God for those promises that even today Nanny reminds us of.... and for her faithfulness to scripture and love of Christ. There is no doubt that angels stand watch over him night and day. :-)
The procedure went well today. As best as I can grasp the understanding.... they took pictures of the openings of the bronchial tubes to the lungs...and of the vocal chords. I added it to our album of Larry's "innards" :-) I think he did some more suctioning...maybe??? and I know he somehow got saline down in the lungs to help flush them out. ( Elaine Paraphrase EP ) He has been coughing and rattled a lot since then...but the surgeon and pulmonologist say that is good and what they expected to happen. It made for a very uncomfortable afternoon but he seems to have gotten his momentum again and will work hard this evening to help the lungs etc do the work they need to do. They ordered a diuretic (sp?)and he had some extra breathing treatments as well.
He had solid food today!! That was an experience. It wasn't soup and applesauce either... he had burgundy beef tips over noodles and veggies etc. ( he worked up to it of course ) He has to learn to eat again....small measured meals through out the day...about 6 of them. It wasn't like he thought it would be...more of a chore really...but he was pleased he could do it. The Dr. said he wouldn't charge extra for all the weight he is going to lose. :-) That is one bright spot in all of this. He has visions of a slim Larry. :-)
Our thanks to each of you for your continued love and encouragement.
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry
11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

We are moving right along this morning.... All the doctor have been in...and given their daily report. The lung and now fluid retention seem to be what they are watching closely. He remains on a diuretic to see if that will remedy the problem. The scoping procedure ( that is safer to spell :-) yesterday showed that the right bronchial tube is a bit swollen still and restricted and that is also why he is not getting the air he needs. There are a number of things that add to that ( the lung is still a little mushed...) ... and the right lung continues to be a slow down in his progress. They all do seem to think he is progressing though...and with a little help here and there will make it through the trauma his body suffered during surgery.
PATHOLOGY REPORT IS IN!!! All margins are clear! To quote our surgeon...." PRAISE JESUS!!! " :-) All the lymph nodes and surrounding tissue are free and clear of any cancer! :-) We got a very detailed report... and it does appear this was very early detection....and it has not spread beyond the primary point!!! :-)
He is making it through his meals OK . There is a bit of discomfort there. The esophagus of course is still healing...and changed up a bit. It functions differently now...and he and his body are figuring it all out. The stomach is in a different & higher place and that has caused a bit of discomfort too I think. Some of these are new pains...now that a some of the horrific pain of surgery is lessening a bit each day. We are thankful for his newly remodeled utilities in there.. Amazing the way God gives the gift of healing to doctors and researchers...so they can be instruments of HIS miraculous work.
Pain Meds: They are taking him off the morphine...yea! I am sure it had nothing to do with the fact that he was talking to his bandage this morning. :-) Prayers that the pain may be managed...and more from a strong dose of the Holy Spirit...than any pill can offer him. :-)
Prayer Needs:
* the right lung/bronchial tube or whatever is not right in there......In the Jewish Tanakh the word ruach refers to breath or wind. In a living being it is breath...from God,our creator, it is wind. Job 27:3 says "The ruach of God ( from God ) is in my nostrils." When ruach is applied to God it indicates creative activity and power. In scripture it also refers to ruach as redemption and upholding and guiding his chosen ones...and the empowering of the Messiah. May the ruach of God...reign supreme in Larry today.
* eating... it is a bit of a challenge.. he can eat..but it is what happens after that gives him pain and discomfort.
*fluid retention...just pray...I am not even sure I can explain...I just know they were all a buzz about it this morn..so it must be important....
* Every doctor reminds me that cancer is microscopic...and as I prayed this morning I felt it was important to address that. Jesus is Lord over every microscopic part of Larry's being... May every part of him.... body, mind and spirit...come under HIS perfect Lordship...
Off to do itsy bitsy spider to him....????? :-) I guess that is another head scratch???? haha!! :-) :-) Conversation this last week....has been interesting... :-)
Our Love & Blessings to all who visit us here on these great pages!!

Larry has been moved to a private room finally. I think it took longer because it had to have cardiac equip available We are still adjusting and getting everything straightened out. Everyone one in ICU was there to see him off with waves and hugs.. :-)
It is much quieter over here and he will be able to move around a little easier. He still isn't walking very far...but he has great plans. :-) Hopefully it will be easier for him to get some rest too.
He had more x rays on the way over.... I guess we will find out tomorrow from the doctor how they look.
Thanks again for the wonderful notes of encouragement...and especially for your prayers...

Greetings from the 15th floor overlooking Houston! :-)
Larry had a pretty good night in his new room. He says he loves it! It is nice, quiet and accommodating. The nurses here are wonderful too and it is perfect as he begins to navigate more and his needs are changing.
Some of you have asked his room info to send a card. He is at
St Luke's Episcopal
6720 Bertner Avenue
room 1555
Houston, Texas 77030
You can also send it to our home address and it will be waiting on him when he returns home. :-) OR.......
You can send and E greeting..... at
www.sleh.com click on patient information /Families & Visitors/ send an eGreeting. Fill out the info and they will print and give it to Larry. Or...you can post on this carepages website and I read them to him every day. This message board has been such an important connection with you all. :-) Isn't internet wonderful! :-)
We are waiting on the remainder of the doctors. Will update later on what they report.
Morning Prayer Requests:
* His cardiologist says he has Pleural Effusion. I haven't researched it yet as he was just in..but he wrote it down for me so I could tell you about it. :-) It seems to be the fluid they were all a buzz about yesterday that is around the lung. As I find out more about it from the other doctors... I will pass that info on....but we would appreciate your prayers in regards to that. The Lord knows what it is all about. :-)
* Pain... keep on praying about this... looking for pain management somewhere between what he can tolerate...with God's help...and meds.
* Our children left on Tuesday to return to Dallas...and they have one by one come down with the flu. They of course are so upset...and worried about their dad and I...and very sick themselves. Please pray for protection from it for Larry and I...and a quick recovery for them. We have already talked to the pulmonary doctor and they are prepared to give us an antiviral at the first symptom.
Have a blessed day and once again...thank you for all the prayers and encouragement.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
Larry walked 7 laps today around the 15th floor. There were times he felt like the runner in Chariots of Fire...trying to make it in for the last lap...… He didn’t faint but he was a little white face and winded…and I won’t say he was weary but a nice long afternoon nap was in order. :-)
His strength is being renewed though...there is no doubt about it. This evening the surgeon came by and decided to aspirate that right lung. He drew out about a quart of fluid and hopefully that will create more space for the lung to expand. It is partially collapsed and seems to be what is mostly holding Larry back. He had more x-rays and I imagine we will get feed back about that in the morning from Dr.S. the pulmonologist.
According to Larry…..things do go better with COKE!!! Yes he got that coke finally!! He wasn’t disappointed. I think that is the only thing he has enjoyed since we have been here. :-)
He continues to improve…slowly. He is getting in and out of the bed much easier …and today a nurse gave him a walker so he could have more mobility. He looked at it and then her...and proceeded down the hall…carrying it. :-) The point was taken...and she relieved him of his burden. Haha! He probably could have used it....but that was one indignity he wasn’t about to suffer….and there are few left it seems.
Tonight’s Prayer Requests:
• Dr. K (the surgeon) said he wouldn’t feel too good at first after the procedure tonight. Please pray he can find comfort regardless. Pray also this will remedy the problem with the lung…and for Larry....that he soars like an eagle through all the exercises and breathing treatments that he must do to strengthen it.
• No flu symptoms…and pray that it stays that way. For quick healing for our children and grandchildren.
• Eating… It is a whole new thing…and painful right now… just cover it in prayer. The Lord knows what he needs.
• Restoration....as his body repairs itself from the trauma suffered.
May the Lord bless each of you

Time sure goes quickly when God is doing GREAT things!
We have been here almost two weeks! Hard to believe so much good has been accomplished in so short a time period.
Larry was talkative today. It has been hard each day to see this very extroverted man lay quiet and drawn …with no smile. He must have been saving up his conversations because he said them all today. A chaplain came by for a visit and gave us communion…the first we have had since we left. He is from Australia and of course we shared about our daughter moving there next week. He said he had been here for 30 years.
The Doctors:
Rubin ( nephrologists ) said Larry is anemic.but did not think he needs a blood transfusion. He is going to treat him with prescriptions.
Nassar ( cardiologist ) was pleased with Larry’s progress
Stadnyk ( pulmonologist ) sent an associate… who said Larry looked good. The right lung still doesn’t sound right but is much improved.
Khalil ( surgeon ) Was extremely pleased with Larry’s progress. The xray showed that after last night’s procedure his lung was expanding. YEA! His pulse oxygen level was at 97 -100 without oxygen! He took him off that today & the little breath o meter exercise was better than he has ever accomplished. (do not know the proper name…. the little gadget that has the little ball that you try to elevate to higher levels….)
Salem….( oncologist ) dropped in again today. He was so pleased and said that he was a lucky man because twice he had beat cancer. He continues to manage the team…and the follow up after surgery.
Larry walked more laps today. He didn’t quite make as many as he wanted to but enjoyed the time exploring his new world.
Everything looks good and we are feeling so grateful that the worst appears to be behind us.
Thank you so much for all those amazing messages…your love and prayers

Larry has left the building!
Going Home
Wow! Your prayers have made such a difference! Larry has made such an amazing rebound and doing so well that Dr. Khalil discharged him to my care in a hotel by the hospital! We must remain in Houston and Larry is on an out patient basis in order to continue the x-rays and whatever other tests he needs to monitor his recovery. He will continue to see the doctors this week but at least he is stable enough that he does not have to stay at the hospital anymore! Praise the Lord! If all goes well we could potentially return home next weekend!!!
He is able to be up at longer intervals and is getting around much easier now. His right lung is still partially collapsed but the doctor said that it is improving every day. The problem with the fluid build up has not returned. He still gets out of breath when he walks but he feels like he can take a little deeper breath at least. The doctors think it will take weeks before that all gets back to normal. His esophagus/ stomach re section seems to be healing nicely though Larry still has difficulty swallowing and eating. The kidney is doing just a dot better now than it was before surgery….and Dr. Rubin wants to continue to work on that after his recovery from surgery. His blood platelets are off a bit…and he is anemic… but he is on meds to control that. Larry is so happy and alternates between snoozing…watching TV….and trying to eat mini meals. Rest & quiet are what he needs most now..
I marvel at how we made it through these last few weeks.
This type surgery without any other issues is a major undertaking. I understand so much better why so many tests were done to make sure Larry was fit for the surgery.
One of the early questions Larry asked me was did his hair turned grey. Even when he was barely aware of what was going on…he knew the severe trauma his whole being was going through. The one thing that made it possible for us to go through this is the prayers of the faithful. At all times we felt that net of intercessions that was constantly bringing Larry before the Lord. We have such gratitude and thanks for all those wonderful prayers!
"If we know how to listen to God, if we knew how to look around us, our whole life would become prayer. It unfolds under God's eyes and no part of it should be lived without being freely offered to him"
Larry and I feel like our life the last two weeks.... became prayer. Each day unfolded under God's eyes...and we freely offered every part of it to Him. How amazing is that... We had that deep peace that only comes from knowing that He would be Lord of our life.
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry

Hello everyone.... wanted to take a minute to give you an update. Taking care of the big guy is a full time job. :-) He is continuing to adjust to being out in the world. After being in ICU for about 11 days...and a total stay of almost two weeks...has a way of turning the world tospy turvey. He is slowly re orienting and catching up on some of what happened during that time. He continues to struggle with swallowing/coughing/ etc...( you don't want to know what etc is. :-) It seriously is very distressing though....and keeps him up much of the night. The doctor said it was part of the recovery process but we would sure appreciate your prayers for that. It has a way of leaving him drained and exhausted when he starts a coughing...and " etc " spell. The healing of the ribs and chest is still a slow painful process..but just before he was discharged he got the staples out....seemed like a bucket of them....and his incision looks pretty good. Pain is a constant drain...and again....your prayers about that are most appreciated.
We saw Dr. Salem today and he was so pleased. He had the complete pathology report...and there is no other cancer in Larry's body... There will be no need to follow with radiation or chemo...and that is indeed good news. :-) PTL!
It was such a delight tonight to read the recent posts. You all make me laugh and cry... It is so wonderful to see the titles of your messages...so creative...and all the wonderful lines of love and encouragement. We need that too daily... When our cup is drained....you fill it right back up. We are sending you our love & thanks right back....and look forward to sharing more of our amazing journey.
Love,
Elaine and Larry

And we have been doing some of that the last few days. :-) Those nights can be a little hard.... and not much sleep going on...but when you think of the amazing things the Lord has done...and is still doing.... well...that could keep you busy all night...counting those blessings.
Blessings we are counting:
We have had some amazing help from our children, my mom & dad, sister and family. They kept me going so I could keep Larry going.... Larry and I are so touched by the sacrifices they have made coming back and forth...and doing those behind the scene needed things that have made these last two weeks possible.
My schedule consisted of early mornings waiting on the doctors to check in....all day monitoring Larry and all his care... following his body around for all those tests and x rays.... and catching a minute here or there at every electrical outlet in St Luke's hospital with my laptop. :-) My new neighborhood consisted of valet parking attendants..nurses.. medical staff..cleaning folk..security guards...doctors... shuttle drivers...and fellow family of other residents of ICU. Somehow my clothes were always clean...I had gas in the car..or money for the various shuttles or whatever I might need. Food showed up...hot and tasty...my favorite drink..or snack...all day long and into the night. I had a constant flow of text messages from them asking how I was...did I need anything... and to let me know...they were available for anything. They made it possible for me to do what I needed to do..and see this through with Larry...They aren't finished yet... Not only did they drive us here...but they are making sure we have a way to get Larry home. When we consider the magnitude of what we have gone through...we have such gratitude for their love and support.
Larry's family has been his number one cheerleaders and so wonderfully supportive. His mom has flown in from Memphis and is going to help me care for him when we return home. His sister has so generously given us free use of her Galveston condo while we made & will make our many trips back and forth to Houston. His brother has taken the worry from Larry of the care of our property management business back in Dallas. His sister Brenda in Memphis...has promised him his favorite Rendezvous Ribs...as soon as he is able to eat them. A personal delivery we hope. :-) Maybe a crystal burger or two..also. :-)
The list goes on...so many personal wonderful sacrifices of love.... and we just want each of you to know....those who have given...and written...and called...and done so many beautiful gifts of love.... are the blessings we count at night while we can't sleep.
Our Love,
Elaine and Larry

Now that we are past the most critical and with the extra care for Larry I haven't had as much time on my updates but thought I would share a more light hearted part of our last few days....
Day 1 Sunday: discharged from the hospital:…. It was a hard night for us. Larry had so many issues that he was still dealing with physically and it was having a negative effect on his state of mind.
Day 2 Monday: After our very difficult night I made an early decision to pack Larry up and drive him to his sister’s condo in Galveston. I called the doctors….re arranged our tests and appointments for that morning and Thursday… and told them what I planned to do…With their permission my mom and I drove him to Galveston. There were times I worried because any effort was exhausting to him…but somehow I seemed certain it was the thing to do. He was comfortable there…it was a home away from home… and it would help him to rest and feel safe. Once I got him there and settled in I knew I was right. We had a lot more room to move around….and the constant sound of the surf was soothing… It wasn’t long before you could see a visible difference. That night…amidst the up and downs of the night’s work…he was able …propped up…to relax and sleep some which was healing.
Day 3 Tuesday: Larry started the day more refreshed …and up to his old tricks…a sure sign he was feeling better. He had been suffering a normal bit of depression over the trauma and serious changes he was enduring. The situation of the condo's “ broken tv” lent him the opportunity to work through that depression. :-) That morning he decided we needed to get a new tv for the condo. A way to say thank you. The fact that we were enduring a crisis of huge proportions did not somehow play in all this. With no Best Buy in site to simply order by phone and deliver… he decided we should trek up to Walmart and get one. No amount of persuasion could talk him out of it. Since his animated wild man look was preferable to the beat down Larboy look we decided we would humor him. When we asked him how we would get him and the tv up four flights of stairs…he said…oh someone would be walking down the parking lot
(which by the way is deserted in January in the beach condo district.) Or…we could ask someone pumping gas if they would do it… that makes sense. :-) So…off to Walmart in hopes he would be too tired by the time we got there. Since that didn’t happen my mom and I found ourselves inside Walmart running behind Larry… a wild man…hair standing straight up…white faced…eyes all bugged out …shirt tail flapping.. as he drove the cart to the tv aisle. Once we had him safely back at the condo on his couch tucked in… my mom and I tackled the question of what to do with the silly TV in the back seat of the car. She said…looking out over the beach ..I wonder if there is a wagon down there. I was ashamed because I hadn’t thought of it myself! We found ourselves in a primeval need for wheels to move a large object. :-) Necessity is the mother of invention and since no two wheeler was in sight…we used the next best thing…my big luggage...on wheels! It is amazing how a 24 inch TV fits so well in my luggage… So… Step by step we rolled it up four flights of stairs…. And into the living room. Larry woke to a TV…hooked up…and ready to surf. He was in heaven…and we smugly... if somewhat a bit winded..sat and enjoyed his pleasure. Job accomplished! :-)
Day 4: We are surfing at the beach...Channel surfing that is!! :-)
Healing is happening!:-)
Blessings to you all!

Houston……The Eagle has landed
Hello and Greetings from Garland, Texas!! Yesterday morning we saw Dr. Khalil and with a little persuasion from Larry, he agreed to release him to fly home in a private airplane. (Our son- in -law's company plane) He wanted Larry to stay through the weekend but Larry was very convincing that he “needed” to go home. :-) The x ray showed that his collapsed lung is very well progressed toward normal.. What a difference that is making! Every day he improves a bit more on his new utilities and Dr. K. said with time he will adjust and things will get better.
With that good news we packed up....and with the favor that the Lord has continued to show us.... were delivered safe and sound to this lovely place called Million Air ( at Hobby Airport). It is where private planes come and go I guess. As we waited on our plane in this very nice lounge area.... Daddy Bush (George Sr. ) arrived and departed under the supervision of police, security and secret service.
As exciting as all that was.. it was overshadowed by the energy I generated once I saw the "plane" we would be flying in. Now you need to know that a jumbo jet...might be stable enough in my mind...if I quiz the pilot and crew to make sure we are all on the same page....and that page would be...get me to my destination without incidence!! Needless to say... when I saw our awaiting transportation.... I nearly broke out into hives and hyperventilated. For the Love of Larry... I swallowed my fear..and stepped on the little ...peddle ( I describe it like that lest you think it was a proper step) ... and onto the "wing” of the plane ...and into one of the four comfortable leather seats that was awaiting us. I secured my 77 year old mother...and Larry...into their seats and tightened my seat belt to the first notch! The pilot stepped over us and into his seat. Our snug little group...in a plane smaller than my daughter's mini van... took off for Dallas! I sent desperate SOS smiley messages of crying and horror to as many prayer warriors as I could muster...as we taxied the runway.. It must have worked...because there was this furious return of answered prayers…and a few smiley faces that were generated. Then God and I got down to business and had a talk. Now I am a patient woman... willing to jump tall buildings at a single bound for those I love.... but this was a bit over the top don't you think! What was God thinking of for gosh sakes!! I tried to relax the finger nail grip I had on my seat and Larry's arm...and that worked until we disappeared into these tall giant clouds. I planted some prayers that have that so plane anointed it wouldn't dare ever crash...and the pilot's life is on a different course..he just doesn’t know it yet....I can promise you. :-) Angels were so crowded on every wing…. inside with us…. and underneath the plane … that it was down right crowded in there!! We made it to the Dallas area ….( the pilot did a wonderful job)…and the plane…even though small in my mind…was surprisingly efficient. As we approached for landing I can honestly say I have never looked over the shoulder of anyone flying into clouds so thick and low that we had to do it by instrument panel! I broke out into a fine sweat as I stemmed the scream generating from my belly button! We dropped down out of those clouds right on top of the Addison Airport. Yikes!!!! A group of men helped Larry out of the plane…and with my heart in my throat and trembling…safely on Dallas soil… made our way home.
I have Larry settled in and we found a recliner that works well. He has slept off and on since we got in…and is exhausted but very happy.
We thank you all again for the fantastic prayers and all the love and support that have made all this so much easier to go through.
Blessings,

Good Morning! I will take a minute to give you a quick update and include our prayer needs before I move on to a very busy day with Larry and catching back up. Hard to believe we were gone about 3 weeks!
Several of you have asked how long will I update. I will probably do it on an as needed basis for now....and maybe not as often but will continue to for a bit....until his health is back to normal. (besides...I will miss you! :-) Though he is out of the woods...he has some weeks of healing and adjusting. If you would like to check in it still remains the easiest way for me to get out that general info and to let you know our prayer needs. I believe an alert is generated by email if I do update.
Some of you have asked about helping out with food and other needs and we are certainly grateful for your generous offers. You can contact our daughter Lara who is co ordinating that.
If you sent a card to St. Luke's Hospital I am pretty sure they will forward those to us.
Another question that has come up is prayers for our daughter Missy. Larry and I certainly would welcome the prayer support for them at this time. She and her husband Wes left for Australia to live and work for two years the day we flew home. They have already called to check on Larry and are safely in Melbourne and doing wonderful. Your prayer support for them would make us feel a little better now. :-)
Prayer Needs:
Continued healing of the right lung … It looks good…and with the breathing exercises and walking it should heal well…but please do continue to cover that in prayer. We go back for follow up appointments with the various doctors in about a month I think.
His new utilities. He has to sleep at a 45 degree angle for a while now (as he heals.) Gravity is key. Hopefully at some point it can be a bit less than that. We need quick but thorough healing. Can’t tell you how important it is for all that to heal properly. As the surgeon said… he is not the creator…but with God’s help improvised so that it still works…and allowed them to remove the cancer. The little valve or muscle ??( Elaine paraphrase) that was once there that told the esophagus to contract and help things reach the stomach has either been compromised or removed??
( still learning about all this ) Plus the little gadget that keeps everything all nice and neat in the stomach isn’t there anymore…( or maybe they are the same???? who knows??? ) So…gravity is the key. Please pray for good gravity… :-) and whatever it takes for the new utilities system to hum.
• Pain… His ribs are wire sutured( ?? ) , if I understand Dr K., from where they separated or broke or whatever to get in to the esophagus. ( and where does the wire go??? ) The pain in the front incision area isn't as painful as the side because until it is properly healed the ribs sort of float …so to speak…and hurts like everything with any movement. There is still internal tissue trauma. It is hard for him sometimes to pin point what exactly hurts more…other than the ribs…that is a constant. Keep praying about that… God understands the need there even if we don't entirely. :-)
Pain management… He is working toward relying on it less with longer intervals in between... As I said before.... we pray the Holy Spirit would provide pain relief better than any pill.
We are still counting our blessings...and you are so much a part of them. As I told our friend Mac yesterday when he said good work in regards to this message board. We all did good work. We were a team. I felt that connection with you all that made the prayers so strong. Thank you for being a part of our team. :-)
God Bless you today and everyday!

A quick note...and I really will be quick. One of the growing things I am noticing with Larry is some expected depression as he feels more like doing things. The magnitude of what has happened in his life.... the limits ( no matter how wonderful that it accomplished the task is sobering )... the changes.... the worry.... all seem to be sitting on him today. I have already started motivating him. I got him to play a few notes on his keyboard... we chatted a bit about things.... we are planning to attempt a card game later.... and a stroll in the back yard. He will have a spot of company later on...and that is always good for Larry. People energize him. I would sure appreciate prayers though. I expected this....and I am up for the task...but sure makes it easier to have my safety net of prayer coverage as I listen to the Lord as I walk with Larry through this part of his recovery.
I just thank God that I can fall back on that prayer coverage...and your love and support. Have a wonderful day...and know that when we count our blessings we think of you.

Oh forgot to say....if you look in the photo gallery you will see some hospital photos of Larry... and that is us on the first page. For some reason they are here and there so you will have to look through the others I have posted to celebrate his life. If anyone would like to send a favorite photo of Larry or of you and Larry...I have room to add more. I think he would enjoy that.
Blessings,
Elaine

Things are still progressing at our house! More slowly than Larry would like but forward moving and that is what counts. :-) He is beginning to get back in touch with his lost days. It seems as though there is this type of medical amnesia. With the help of those that were there...and those of you that have shared with him from the carepages...and what he remembers...he is piecing it all back together. I printed him the entire journey (carepages ) and he read all 16 pages the other day. He was pretty amazed. It is interesting to hear his perception of how things played out in comparison to what we as onlookers perceived was happening. The one thing that is very clear of the events that unfolded from Jan 22nd to now....is that God's grace and mercy has covered us. After all the sharing is done...and everyone has their "take" on things.... everyone agrees...that God isn't finished with Larry yet. :-) We look forward to the days ahead to see what God's plan is. :-)
OK....here is where we are in the healing process....( just to update you so you can get busy on those prayers :-)
1. I see progress with the whole " new utilities" process! Small...but progress all the same....and THAT is wonderful news! Remember ....gravity is key... and I am going to just make a leap and say...we want God to supernaturally provide the process that was removed in surgery.... why not! :-) I have heard..that there are those that regain some of that...so that is what I want us to pray for Larry. He needs everything to go right on down and digest the way God made for all that to work... I figure the human body is pretty remarkable..and can adapt...and expand and do all kinds of wonderful things with God's help... so...lets be in agreement that all those utilities work the way they were intended to. :-)
Lungs/ribs... that whole area is still pretty painful...but improving. His breathing is still not 100% so just keep on praying. Activity should improve that too.
Anemia...I think all that is getting better...but he still seems a little weak... I think that just takes time.
Depression...keep on praying about this. Part of his getting back in touch with those lost days will help... and as he moves into normal activity... Still...it is a life change...and just the surgery trauma can cause some normal depression... Never once was he defeated during those days.... and there is no reason for him to feel defeat now. We can say confidently that he is 100% cancer free...and recovering victoriously through Christ Jesus!
His other functions of concern ....heart and kidney seem good... His BP looks great...
Thanks to all of your cards, calls, notes...and good wishes!! They cheer and encourage us! :-)
Have a wonderful day!
Elaine and Larry

Still Counting our Blessings!!
We are having lots of opportunities to count our blessings these days. As Larry and I are trying to get grounded again....and take note of all the activities that are going on around us....we are certainly struck by the incredible outpouring of love and support of so many. We recall with great warmth the many acts of kindness done on our behalf...not to mention the wealth of prayer! I was sharing with Fr. Ted the other day.... that if we think we are helpless as Christians...Larry and I want to assure everyone that the Christian war machine....that fine army of prayer warriors...is well oiled and fine tuned for mega battle!! We are defended and protected like nothing you can even imagine in the natural! Add to that the protection we are given by God...in the heavenlies...and Larry and I are in a position to tell you....that we should NEVER underestimate that little scripture about faith as small as a grain of a mustard seed!! :-)
Our big guy....is getting...smaller... :-) Along with being cancer free....Praise the Lord!!!...he is losing some significant weight. :-) He does not mind that at all! So we have to think of someone else to associate his looks with other than Pavarotti(sp?) haha... He doesn't look like him anymore.... I am gonna go take a picture of him...and post it in the photo gallery.... You need to know how good he is looking these days. :-)
He continues to improve on all accounts...so keep those prayers coming!!! They are very effective!
We give thanks today.... for all the many prayers... calls..cards...meals...offers of help...encouragement... that so wonderfully keep pouring in. We are humbled and touched more than you can ever know.
Our Love and Blessings to you all!!!!

It is hard to believe the surgery was only a month ago. So much happens each day we seem like we are in a time warp. As Larry’s physical condition improved this last week he found himself haunted with the question… did he make the right decision. As head cheerleader and caregiver I have tried to understand his many emotions but how do you find the fine balance between compassion and tough love that is necessary for him to heal, body, mind and spirit. That has been my quest.
In my usual way, I sent out the beacon for prayer support and with God’s help got on the internet and discovered a world of support groups designed for Esophageal Cancer Survivors (or EC).
I found pages of message boards that talked about the different phases of this disease from those just having discovered it, to the physical challenges that come up after surgery (including an awesome design to alter and elevate a bed frame for just $$)and even those looking for some encouraging hope or info. Those message posts convinced me of one thing... WHEW!! We are blessed that Larry was even a candidate for surgery!!
So I dutifully went back over every single step of our decision making process. Then I compiled what I researched of our original options along with the new info of what other EC folks have done or wish they could do and the bottom line is he is one blessed guy to even have the choice! With EC the survival rate is very poor and usually less than 5 %. Larry’s experience is down right miraculous in that he requested the upper endoscope even with no symptoms!(thanks to Jim) The doctors were all saying that and all the info we found said that and now survivors or those who will not survive EC are saying it loud and clear.
To take that a step further thru the EC websites I found some compelling information that...as of this date....( 2007) top U.S. medical teaching centers are reporting. To site one of the studies,at the Mayo Clinic I think, statistics so far show that those who chose a less invasive method of treatment in order to save their esophagus and stomach reported that about 62% of those had to go back in with a full esophagectomy(sp?). At that point their cancers were advanced and they were fighting for their lives. Most of those in the study did not survive. We nearly took that option!
With this new information and God’s help, I can see a marked difference in Larry’s emotional recovery. That’s not to say that he doesn’t feel discouraged with all the new challenges but he is better able to weigh the extreme discomforts with the consequences of not being where he is today. I share this in hopes of encouraging those who put off good medical decisions and healthcare management. I know it takes a lot of effort with all the insurance obstacles. It is so much easier to just do what is expected of us. That may not however save your life.
For me one of the greatest things I discovered online is that we went about everything exactly the right way. All the survivors give this advice:
Select a great treatment team led by a great, compassionate Medical Oncologist (Dr. Salem),
great Gastroenterologist (Dr.Douglas),
and eventually a great abdominal/thoracic Surgeon (Dr. Khalil).
The patient doing a lot of research is the third requirement (or his wife :-) Last but not least is to find physicians with a great deal of experience and history in diagnosing and treating EC patients in a teaching facilitity such as MD Anderson, because the facilities are usually better and critical care physicians are on site. (Remember we wanted to do this in Dallas but Dr. Salem insisted on that center) We know that God led us down this path. Larry and I took off for Houston armed with the research I did on the internet and the words etched in our hearts to Go forth in Faith to receive your healing. And Praise God Larry is healed!
Your continued prayers for a complete healing are so apprecitated!
Blessings to all,

Brain Meltdown
Well it seems as though I have finally found a definition of what we are going through. According to a recent article I read that would be a Brain Meltdown. Read on if you would like to hear more about this phenomenon.
In a really good article we read the other day for patients and caregivers, it says that one of the recognized causes of post surgery depression is the extraordinary physical and emotional stress you endure. Well THAT is an understatement! The article goes on to say that stress triggers all kinds of chemical reactions in the brain. These chemicals regulate mood, among other things. Imagine that! A little ole chemical can do all that!
The article also addressed the “fight or flight” reflex that is triggered. It is a basic brain function, from human to earthworm, that is essential for survival. Seems when you are fighting all you can to survive the brain has a little meltdown. So...just so you will know how to pray... us and the earthworms are having a teeny little meltdown over here at our house. Oh! And it said we definitely need more Seratonin. Does anyone have any extra Serotonin..cause we need a lot right now! :-)
It goes on to say that some of the symptoms are....we might have difficulty concentrating, a teeny bit of frustration, a bit of a negative outlook, not so enthusiastic or upbeat and.... general apathy. Hello-O-O that would be at our house. :-)
So... now you know what to pray for... just us and the earthworms over here having a bit of a brain meltdown. Isn’t it great that God knows how to heal that too. :-)
A bit of good news....we got The Bed Wedge today. Yea! It isn’t some Mickey Mouse little wedge either. This is the Mama of all wedges… It flips...it elongates...it double stacks & raises you to a better than 45 degree angle...and... is guaranteed to cure what ails you! :-)
We have all day post surgery doctors appointments in Houston Monday the 5th. Please pray for safe travel...and good reports.
Thanks for your awesome prayers! We don’t know what we would do without you!!
Much Love!

Post Surgery Trip to Houston
At 4:00 am yesterday morning as I dressed to begin our trek to Houston I mentally questioned why in the world we were driving 250 miles…each way to see six doctors. It had nothing to do of course with the fact that I don’t do mornings but when I discovered Starbucks was not open at 5:00 am I was sure it was a sign! I silently beseeched God to close highway 45 all the way to Houston for repairs. God had other plans though because 30 minutes down the road a billboard led the way to His angels of mercy. A venti, fat free, sugar free, light foam, caramel macchiato and a light foam latte along with a couple of glazed doughnuts, put the tiger back in our tanks and we were off to Houston to see the doctors! :-)
Seeing all six doctors warmed our hearts. They seem more like family now. Larry had lab work and x rays done also. From 10 am to about 5pm…there was something every hour. Here is what we discovered from each doctor. (and for your continued prayer support)
• Khalil (the surgeon) From his point of view Larry was healing nicely. He wants him to begin some light exercises and said he could drive and resume work as he feels like it.
• Rubin (the nephrologist) We got a report from him today. He will continue to monitor his kidney. It is still under functioning. He thinks the change with his blood pressure meds should improve it.
• Nasser (the cardiologist) His blood pressure was up and his heart rate was way down. So meds have been adjusted and we will talk to him in a week.
• Stadnyk (the pulmonologist) He still has the pleural (sp?) effusion. ( fluid around the lung ) It is better but some is still there. The lung is still not fully re inflated. It still is a bit smushed. He says he thinks it will improve with time but will be a smaller lung with the stomach occupying some of the space.
• Douglas ( the gastroenterologist sp?) He is going to do another upper endoscope in 3 months to see how things look in there. He gave him prescriptions to help quickly empty his stomach (like a stomach laxative nearly) He also gave him a prescription for acid and has him taking gavascon because it foams and won’t let the acid come up. ( I didn’t know that) He recommended diet items to avoid.
• Salem (the oncologist) Was very pleased with all reports and thought Larry’s progress was awesome.
All doctors were pleased with his progress and said it would just take time to begin to feel better, and regain his energy. They all felt like we should work toward getting an adjustable bed. That should improve his sleep. Dr. Douglas thinks he can improve the reflux problems a good bit. They all wanted him to begin to exercise and walk. They don’t expect him to be fully healed for months yet. He will see them again in a month.
On the way home we had an opportunity to reflect on the day. We both found being there again in the medical complex brought up all kinds of feelings and emotions and retelling the story of how it all happened took up most of our drive home. As we recanted those memories of the events that took place in Houston that changed our life so dramatically, we once again marveled at how God brought each piece of this beautiful work together. We realized that when we were lost and confused, HE brought clarity and peace. When we were afraid, HE brought courage. When we lost heart, HE brought hope and HE gave us Faith which was the ability to act upon the discernment and direction that HE gave us.
We are rejoicing today at the Victory over the battle of cancer through Christ Jesus. In the words of our beloved Dr. Salem, Larry is a very blessed man! He has defeated cancer twice!
We are in awe of the incredible sacrifice of prayer and support you have each shown us. You became our net of safety and love. We will forever be thankful.

Here is the latest on Larry:
He has made good improvement this last week. He continues to get out more and more and that has been good for his spirits. He is sleeping much better at night now too. A combination of the Bed Wedge and pillows seem to keep him propped up for now. We are still working on getting the adjustable bed. I think that will be the best option of all to alleviate some of his sleep distress.
The gastric meds seem to be doing their job. Eating is a chore and he has to remember during the day to do it. He is still trying to figure out amounts and what he can tolerate. I have him on Ensure for now until he is able to work out how to eat with out causing him distress. He is down to 188 lbs!! It looks good on him though and he is enjoying getting into some clothes he hasn't worn in a while. I predict a new wardrobe in the future when his weight levels off. :-)
He has started using a treadmill to improve his lung and thanks to the efforts of my mom we may be able to get some respiratory therapy for him. I think this will improve not only his breathing but his overall well being. He still has a hard time focusing and his energy level could improve alot more still.
He will see a local nephrologist as soon as we can get him in. His name is Dr. Toto and he was recommended by the one in Houston as being very good. We need to have his one kidney that is still underfunctioning monitored closely and hope for a good bit of improvement.
Prayer Requests:
*That we can get in to see Dr. Toto quickly. These good doctors stay booked out for months. It is important to get in as soon as we can.
* Improvement of his remaining kidney. It is operating at only 39% and it should be better than that.
* That the exercises and therapy improve his lung that is still partially collapsed.
* That his spirits will continue to improve.
* Pray for a great $$ deal on that adjustable bed. :-)
* wisdom for the way he is having to learn to eat...and tolerance of food.
Thanks for all your great prayers and love and support!
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry

May 4th Update
It has been awhile since I updated. We mostly have been dealing with the kind of healing that just takes time. Today we saw Dr. Toto at UTSW in Dallas. He was referred to us by Dr. Rubin in Houston who said Dr. Toto is a fantastic doctor and he is local. We really like Dr. Toto. He is a very energetic bright man who looks to be about our age. It took a bit to go over everything starting back in Jan 2006 with the first surgery to remove his kidney. I tell everyone that this last year we had two surgeries and a wedding…. You could tell Dr. Toto thought Larry was recovering well. We are waiting on the lab work to find out the creatinin levels…but he went ahead and changed his meds to begin the process of turning Larry away from renal disease. At the level his kidney is functioning now that is most certainly what is expected to happen along with the threat of heart attack and stroke. He gave a few pointers for diet…and said his lungs sound better than he expected. ( Larry has been on the treadmill ) He referred Larry to a local cardiologist, gastroenterologist & and internist. The visit was a boost for Larry and gave him a lot of confidence in the healing in his body.
Tomorrow we leave for Galveston to begin a 5 nite 6 day cruise in the Western Carribbean. The cruise is a gift from a friend who loves us and wanted us to be able to rest. We do not know who this kind person is…but we are very grateful for such a lovely way for us both to continue to recover. Dr. Toto was enthusiastic about us going and deemed Larry fit to travel. We ask your prayers for safe travel…and no complications. Please pray also for Larry as he continues to suffer some post op depression. If that persists he will see a doctor about it when we return.
Other areas of prayer are…
• That Larry can be energized and focus as he returns to a full time schedule.
• Continued prayer for the new plumbing… things are improving and he is sleeping so much better at night with only a 15% incline!
• Finances… That the Lord will show us how to best work through it all
• That Joy is returned to Larry. It has been a time of grieving for him as he redefines life…..and seeks to find the path the Lord has for him.
Thanksgivings…..
• For his increased appetite
• For the 50 lbs he has lost so far ( He weighs 185!! )
• For days without pain
• To be witnesses of God’s amazing work
• For our wonderful cruise…and a brand new outfit that another friend gave me for the trip! Thank you God for ALL our wonderful friends and sisters and brothers in Christ. Your love has literally carried us through all of this.
I must finish packing. Those of you who know me…know this is likely an all nighter…something I tend to do before a trip… ;-) I will update when we return and receive the lab reports…
Thank you for your amazing love, support and prayers.

Hello and Blessings to all of you who have supported us through this long recovery period. I wanted to give you an update on Larry.
Lab report came back from Dr. Toto, the nephrologist here in Dallas, and it was excellent! It has been a very long time since Larry was in this good health. Much of it is owed to the dramatic weight loss. He is down to 169. All areas, blood pressure, cholesterol etc look awesome. Good news! His kidney function is just a dot off!!! Doctor was so pleased! PTL! Physically Larry is doing amazingly well!
Larry saw Dr. Sree on Thursday. That is his Dallas gastro doctor. He has him set up to have an upper endoscope as soon as we can find a date that will work for us. I will post that when we know. He wants to go in and see how everything looks and make sure there is no other damage to the esophagus. That will be done here in Dallas at UTSW. He was very pleased with how Larry looked and all his stats.
As you know we were given an anonymous gift of a cruise from a friend to help with the recovery process. It was wonderful to just sleep and eat for 5 days and did us tremendous amount of good.
Larry went on an antidepressant ( Lexapro ) as soon as we returned from the cruise. However as he struggles to try and return to work and deal with the mountain of bills he is finding each day a struggle. Prayers for this would sure be appreciated and right now top on our list.
We are so grateful for all the amazing things God has done this year and yet heavy with the feelings of having walked through such severe trauma. Fortunately there are some wonderful books, great info online and faithful friends and professionals who have walked with us through this very hard time. It is difficult not to wonder how folks get through a time like this without the profound presence of Christ and the translation of that into a net of safety, which is family, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.
I don’t ever think we will be the same. Somehow that is both sad and good. We have said goodbye to our innocence. Our friend Ann, who walked ahead of us on this path with her precious husband Jim, who is home with Jesus now, said those words to us at the beginning of our latest battle. How right she was. We look back at ourselves a year ago, just youngsters, who had a passion for life and we are so grateful for the way we always found such joy in it. The joy of the Lord has truly been our strength. As we look ahead to the new “us” we marvel at how we have redefined ourselves and amazed at the ability to do it. Maybe we aren’t feeling so youthful these days ;-) but no doubt we are stronger and embrace the life that God has given us. We do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
In Joel 2 it says
“ Rejoice in the LORD your God!
For the rain he sends demonstrates his faithfulness “
We have certainly had a lot of rain here in our part of Texas!!!
May the Lord Bless you all!

I wanted to give a quick update on Larry....
His PSA and white count are elevated...and we have to go see his urologist Dr. Cadeddu or his associate Dr. Rorh - whatever...can't spell his name. He is the prostate guy in his office. They are putting him on an antibiotic as precautionary in case it is prostatitis (sp?) until he has a check up......and if it is not....I imagine they will do a biopsy. :-(
His cholesterol...the good guys are low.... walking & more activity will hopefully remedy that or otherwise he will have to go on cholesterol meds... to elevate his good cholesterol.
He is having an upper endoscopy July 18th to check out the surgery area. Pray it will be a very boring procedure.
Blood pressure....well we are still looking for normal.... it has been way down with the weight loss ( 75/40) and now up a bit too high...go figure..... so we are trying something else..... This is very important...as it protects his kidney to keep that pressure at about 120/70.
depression...they have added welbutrin. He is ....improved.
His weight seems to have leveled off finally.... he is working hard to eat ( for gosh sakes ) and drinking lots and lots of water.... it seems to be helping....
He isn't taking the news too well on the prostate.... though he is trying.....
Some good news.... We are moving foward on the sell of some land we own that will help tremendously with our finances... We have some other things we are doing and they all seem to be very positive. There is no doubt to all involved that God is very much orchestrating it all... PTL! That is an answer to prayer! I will update more when things take shape a bit more. Your prayers are working !!!
Please continue to pray.... We still marvel at all the rain we are having in Texas. For us a sure demonstration of the Lord's faithfulness. ( Joel 2 ) Our lakes are not only full....but brimming over.... and everything is beautifully green!
Signs of great things to come!!! :-) Blessed be His Holy Name!
Love in Christ,
Elaine and Larry

I am here at the hospital with Larry for the post op 6 mo. upper endoscope. So far all is ok.... They let me go back to the procedure room to talk with everyone.... ( doctor..techs..nurse etc ) I had so many questions and requests... :-) They were really nice about it....and everyone took notes.... They knew we had been through a lot and that as Larry's advocate it was important to me for them to be sure they didn't miss anything.
He is not at all thrilled to be going through this again...so was quiet.... as I have found he gets under extreme stress... and working to be calm and focused on the work these good men and women of healing are dedicated to. I got him to lighten up a bit...and he even smiled and tried to be light hearted about being " thrilled to get the IV or many other invasive critters " so that was encouraging.
Some areas of prayer focus are:
Of course to check the surgery area....and remaining esophagus and stomach for any new or unusual activity... This is the stomach gripper... We would like for this to be very BORING! Nothing exciting or interesting. :-)
Vocal chords....he has had some hoarseness...want to make sure there is no damage or problem there.
A good look at anything else in THE REGION. :-)
I will update after I talk to the doctor and have a moment. They are going to let me go back with Larry as soon as he is in recovery.
Thanks for the prayers!

Larry is home and there were no complications as far as the actual upper endoscope procedure. Prior to surgery he often had issues with the anesthesia but it seems the 70 lb weight loss has resolved that ...which is good news.
I spoke with Dr. Sree while Larry was in recovery and he gave me more photos to add to Larry's collection of his innards. The vocal chords look great...no problems there so that is good news also. At the junction of the stomach and esophagus ( which is one of the sites of the surgery ) there are several red patches. He biopsied those and sent them to pathology. He said it could possibly be some irritation that is around the sutures from the surgery...( not sure what they are composed of but very visible on the photos).... or it could be some irration due to reflux....or it could possibly be some new activity in that area around the surgery site. The pathology report will let us know which of those it is and we will not receive those results probably until the first part of next week. I guess I do not have to tell you which of those would be the best results.
The stomach looked good... though they noticed he was not emptying it properly. He will resume a medication he took after surgery which should help with that process.
They have scheduled him this Friday 9:00 am for a CT Scan just to be on the side of caution....which is exactly what we want. Larry is resting....and still under the effects of the anesthesia so he hasn't really had an opportunity to internalize all this. I would sure appreciate your prayers as we wait for all the results of these most recent tests. I will update as we know anything.
Love and Blessings to all,
Elaine and Larry
Let my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day
But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.

Just a note to let you know Larry and I are doing OK today. Naturally we would rather not have to deal with this but we are trying to keep ourselves busy and will just wait to see what the facts are. I can tell you that is easier said than done. :-) Our minds tend to wander into the area of .....what if... We know from experience that it is better to stay with God on this though.....and allow Him to walk us through this part of our journey in the same amazing way HE has been doing all along! It does not seem to be a very straight path....but we are sure of where it leads us. :-)
Many of you have called to ask how Larry is taking it... and I must say those antidepressants and anti anxiety pills are working great! :-) As I have shared before...this is all new territory for us...but it has certainly opened up understanding, on our part,of how little we know about depression and how it can affect us. We have gotten some great books on it and so many have shared. It is hard to do...the sharing... but you have traveled this far with us on our journey ...so I guess you may as well this too. :-) The GOOD NEWS is.... Larry is coping just fine with it today. PTL! and THAT is an answer to prayer!!
Well team...keep up the work....we sure need you....and cannot tell you how much we love and appreciate you!!! You are the epitome of the Army of Christ in action!!!
May the holy and life-giving God
teach us to reverence all His works,
to praise Him in all we do,
to live in His image and to His glory.
Love and Blessings!!

Larry and I are back at home and all went well with the CT Scan. It was the type of procedure that requires you to drink barrium so not too fun. Larry says if you have to do this....do not get the Vanilla Smoothee....choose the citrus blend. :-)
They did tell us that his creatinin levels from his kidney are more improved than they were in May. So that was great news! We needed that kidney to do better. :-)
It will hopefully be the first part of next week when they let us know the results of the scan and biopsy. I will update the carepages with that info as it continues to be the best way to get the info out to everyone.
We so appreciate all your messages of Love and Encouragement....and especially your prayers.... They truly do make a difference.
Our Love and Blessings to all,
Elaine and Larry

Start Praising the Lord!!! The results are in!!!
There is no dysplasia, cell irregularities or any other activity to be concerned about!!! The doctor's office just called and everything looks great!!! Have you fainted yet!! :-) Well we nearly did...with joy and relief!
They said the redness is only irritation that is a result of the stomach not emptying properly and is causing some reflux. Not emptying the stomach properly is something that can occur with this type surgery and why initially they had him on the medication. They have prescribed it again, probably indefinitely, because the reflux unchecked is what can lead to Barrett’s…which leads to dysplasia. It may also be the reason for some of his weight loss because his stomach always felt full.
All other organs and areas look good ....with the exception of the enlarged prostate...and we will see the doctor about that on Friday at 3 pm. Needless to say....we are celebrating and Praising God! We are feeling a lot of gratitude right now for the wonderful men and women who dedicate themselves daily to helping us all stay healthy.
We are so very thankful to you all too ....for your love, support and prayers. You could just feel the power from the magnitude of prayer that was generated on our behalf. We could not do any of this without you! A precious friend wrote this morning to tell me that she wanted to help carry this burden. You have each been doing that and you cannot know how much that means to us.
God's Most Amazing Blessings to all of you!!! We are going out to dinner!!!!
Love,
Elaine and Larry

Singing HIS Praises!
We have sure enjoyed the messages and posts you all have sent to join us in celebration of our great news! I must say.... we were smiling and laughing a lot this last week. It sure felt good too!
Larry saw the doctor on Friday regarding the prostate....and of course they want to do a biopsy... Larry is going to start charging for any more " samples " :-) They will do that this next Thursday at 9 am. The doctor was not excited with the results of the CT Scan, the PSA and exam. He is a great Dr.... in the same team as Dr. Cadeddu who did the kidney surgery and we have the utmost confidence in him.
We are doing just fine with this newest info.... Our joy from the results that we received on Monday...far outweigh anything we heard on friday... We will take it one step at a time.... marveling at all the wonders that God has done so far....and giving Him our Thanks and Praise!
Rejoicing in the Lord!

We can't keep the Sonshine out!
You all are wonderful! Love those posts!! Thank you for joining in on our joy and for all the encouragement!
This week really was one of the best weeks since our daughter's wedding last October. It was shortly after that we got the report on Larry's esophagus... That was 8 months ago! I don't think we have laughed since then...but we have done a lot of that this last week... for nearly anything you can imagine. :-) Not even thursday's procedure seems to dampen that either. The "Son" that shines in us.... seems to push out any darkness that might try to bring us down... :-)
We began the preparation for the biopsy of the prostate at the hospital this morning..It is my understanding this is more than the usual tissue sample they will be taking. I think he said 32 samples. Is that gonna leave any prostate? :-) We will return on Thursday at 7 am and it is scheduled for 9 am. I will update you soon as I see the doctor afterward. I think it will be some days before we get lab results tho I may have some feedback from the doctor.
Please continue to pray... Your prayers are very powerful.....and may the Lord Bless you for it!

We are home from the hospital. No problems with the procedure. It will of course be about Tuesday before we have anything conclusive but the doctor's initial observation was that though the prostate is enlarged he did not see anything else and that could possibly be the only reason for the elevated PSA. Dr. Roehrborn said, " that could be good. " ) but would comment no further until we receive the pathology report.
Larry is resting and doing just fine. Thanks for your prayers.....keep them coming! I will update as soon as I get a call with the results. :-)
Blessings,

Negative never sounded like such a wonderful word!!
The report is in....and the results are NEGATIVE!!! Did you ever think negative could be such a positive word!! What a blessed relief it was to hear the doctor's office report that today! Larry does not have to go back to this doctor for 6 months either! Yea!!!
They said there was some inflammation and they will watch it....but it was as the doctor said.... It is GOOD!
We are VERY happy and excited tonight....and just marveling at these wonderful reports! Thanks to all of you for sticking by us ....and keeping the Prayer Hot Line to Heaven going!!!
Much Love and Blessings,
Elaine and Larry :-)

Finding the threads of our life
Since our last reports of joy and excitement over the great outcome of Larry's six month medical follow up we are working hard at trying to find the threads of our life and make sense out of it. We are discovering all the amazing ways the Lord is bringing about restoration each day. The promises of that restoration came all spring and part of summer with all the rains. We printed and hung up Joel 2 everywhere….and smiled as our lakes refilled…and grass turned green and our parched earth was rehydrated. Just as it promises in Joel 2 and watching the earth be made new again…it seemed so symbolic of what God was doing in us too.
Our weeks have been filled with visits from family and friends….and catch up Mimi and Big Daddy time with the grandkids. We have renewed our plans to “get on “ with the house re-do that we started and had to put aside. We also hope that next year we can take a trip to see our daughter in Australia. That became a possibility when I discovered we have enough reward points to pay for a round trip air ticket to Melbourne! Larry has renewed energy to begin work again with the Mexico ministry and fondly anticipates seeing Dr.Chavez and the orphans there. Our honey do lists are getting longer as we are beginning to take notice of things left to gather cob webs during our leave of absence from every day life. We have some new interests and passions. We have found our heart goes out to anyone discovering or going through a life threatening medical situation as we have. It has become important to us to reach out to give hope and encouragement and hopefully be a source of information. We have also decided while our calendar remains open that it is a good time for some needed Christian discipleship. We are also enjoying a time of rest with no busy schedules or commitments. This too is a gift from God.
We have been blessed in so many other ways too. Hardly a week goes by that there is not some amazing kindness that is given to us. It renders us speechless and we are so humbled by the goodness that is shown to us. If you look at our situation it would seem as if all that makes life successful was taken from us. That only left God’s mercy and THAT is where it gets pretty amazing. Nothing by the world’s standards makes sense out of how well we are doing and how much we are being restored. Larry is healing, our business is doing well, and we have the love and comfort of friends, family and home. We are truly experiencing what Joel 2 promises!
We discovered our greatest blessing of all is the privilege to be able to say, it is well with our soul, because Jesus Christ is our Lord!
Grace, Peace and Love,
Elaine & Larry

Finally! We got the reports back from Larry's doctors.....only about an hour ago! Good news on the endoscope! No malignancy or Barretts Esophagus!!! PTL! There is some inflammation at the re section site where it is still healing and maybe some irritation due to reflux so they are going to keep him on his meds....and keep an eye on it....but otherwise they are very pleased! PTL!!!
The report also came back on the kidney. He is still a bit off on this. The creatinin (sp?) levels are still elevated....and all those other numbers that represent different things....are either up or down....but only a little. They just readjusted his blood pressure medicine and I think that may help some. We are to talk to the doctor about it so keep all that in your prayers.... Guidance....and healing and normal for that kidney. Otherwise......we are feeling very relieved, happy and thankful over here at the Abbott House. :-)
May you be truly blessed this Christmas!

Larry's procedure today was good. .... They did another biopsy on the tissue at the juction of the stomach and esophagus...which is the surgery site. There are some nodules at that junction and the tissue is still somewhat red. The dr. thinks it is ok....and he feels like it is probably red because that area is still in the healing process..... but wants to be sure. It is improved since his last biopsy in july. He is still having some digestion issues and some reflux. The dr. thinks that can be managed with the medications he is taking but he is watching it to be sure new barretts does not form. I do not think Larry can be any more careful than he is about eating. The biopsy will tell the final story and we will receive those results next week. I will update as soon as we get the report.
Thank you for your prayers.... please continue to pray as he heals...and about those results...
Blessings,
Elaine and Larry

What is “happening” with the Abbotts
Greetings! We have so much to report. Can you believe it is already Christmas and the end of the year! Larry and I are amazed to find that we are already seeing the anniversaries of so many “happenings “ from last year.
We Praise God for the miracle of healing He has brought into our life!
A bit of an update of what is going on. Larry is back at work and we are in organization mode as there are many changes in our life. We scaled back our office and have a reduced schedule. God has been good to sustain us and we have been so blessed by those who have come forward to help us out. We keep Joel 2:21-27 on our refrig. as a reminder of God's promise of restoration and added 1Kings 17:10–15 about Elijah and the widow whose oil and flour did not run out. :-)
We are also reorganizing our personal lifestyle and commitments. As Larry continued to struggle with depression following the 2nd surgery we began to look for ways to cope with that. We found not many talked about this part of the recovery process and it is so needed! We have lived what has happened to us as openly as we can, so that you might see the hope and victory in Christ Jesus. As we prayed we felt like an answer God was providing (along with some very good meds) was to join a discipleship group at our church. It seemed good to just join in the teachings and fellowship. Larry was very receptive to the warmth and love of the folks at our church and amazingly they had relocated about 4 minutes from our house, and THAT was good. :-)
God in His wisdom led us to find just the kind of outlet we needed and we are experiencing healing through the Biblical principals we are learning about in a deeper way. At home we have developed a routine of prayer and study together like we have never experienced before. The discipline of that plus the teachings and fellowship have had an amazing effect on us. Initially Larry had some anxiety about it and was open about that to the group. It was such a blessing to see them gather around and pray about that right on the spot. The results are that along with his slim new body, you see the return of the warmth, wit and humor that God gifts this man with. I often say this precious group of Christians have literally loved us back to life.
There are many of you who have continued to be a part of that network of love and support that has loved us back to life and we thank God for your faithfulness. It has been a long journey and we marvel at the power and presence of Christ that we experience every single day. Thanks be to God!
Prayer Needs:
It is time for the six month follow up from the last upper endoscopy. It is scheduled for this Friday morning the 7th at about 9 am. I will update the results.
The doc is also going to check out a hernia that Larry has developed at the front surgery site. It is about the size of a lemon and I would really like you to cover that in prayer. The doc said it was not uncommon for that to happen.
Back Pain. He suffers with a great deal of pain at the surgery site.
Depression... continued prayers. He will review the meds with his doctor in the next few months. At some point they will begin to bring him off of them. Please pray for guidance for us and the doctor.
Blood pressure… It is important to keep that normal to protect his kidney. It needs to level out and be managed.
Creatinin levels. We are waiting on lab results. We saw the nephrologist a few weeks ago. This determines if the kidney is functioning properly.
Our thanks and love to each of you. May the Lord bless, guide and protect you each and every day.
Elaine and Larry
